Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 DICKSON was born in 1816, in Ireland, and lived in Limerick. In the 1881 Census of Great Britain, William was living in Govan, Lanark, Scotland. William died after 1881 but no location is known. He married JANE HILL on the 7th September 1840 in St Munchin's Anglican Church, Limerick, Ireland.

William on the 3 October 1865 lived in Taylor Street, Limerick and was identified in the Street Directory for Taylor Street in 1866. William was a plumber by profession.
No day or month date of birth has been obtained, nor records of William's parents. Although a number of Dickson families have been traced in Limerick, it has not been possible to establish a link. The year of birth is taken from the 1881 Great Britain census entry for William (William was by then in Scotland) that states his age. At the time of the census William was recorded as "married" though his wife Jane was not resident on the night of the census. Resident in the property were his daughter Isabella and son George.
Interesting facts are that William married Jane Hill in an Anglican church located in the "Anglican part of the city", yet the residence in Taylor Street was close to the Irish Town Catholic section of the community. Taylor Street is part St John's Parish and within Shannon Ward. None of the children from the marriage were baptised Roman Catholic, so it is assumed that both William & Jane were of the Anglican faith.
In the O'Laughlin Master Book of Irish Names, the family origins of "Dickson" are listed as Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim, Limerick, (Irish census 1659), & before 1780 some were of English origin in Limerick, Down and Antrim.
Hill has origins listed as Ulster, Dublin, Down, Antrim, Cork & Dublin with English origins principally in Antrim. Hill is also listed as the 50th most numerous family name in England.
Hill is not identified as a name associated with Limerick, whilst both Dickson and Hill have association with both Antrim & Down.
Research undertaken by Dr S.C. O'Mahony of the Limerick Regional Archives elicited the following conclusion: -
"Despite the fact that Dicksons were relatively numerous in Limerick in the 18th century, and that there were several Williams born in Limerick in the first two decades of the 19th, there is no reason to believe any of them to be identified with yours. Quite the contrary, in fact your William called his eldest children John and Isabella, (and) there is no couple of those names. Your William, and John after him, used the distinctive names Matilda & Florence; these are not to be found in any other Dickson family in Limerick"
At first sight this appears to be discouraging, however an alternative set of assumptions can be applied as follows.
The first born child was Isabella, who could have been named after a person (the mother) of the family of Jane Hill, and not after a Dickson as concluded by Dr O'Mahony. The next child to be born was a male, John, and it is likely that this was the name of William's father, if the family tradition of naming first born males after the "grandfather" is true.
Further more if the descendents of William (b 1816) are reviewed, then his first born son John (b1844) named his first born son William (b1865) after his grandfather.
Taking the second eldest son of John (b1844) this would be John (b1867) possibly named after his father; and he named his firstborn son John (b 1893) after his grandfather.
If we now jump a generation again we find that John (b 1893) named his firstborn son John (b unknown), again possibly after his grandfather.
This gives us a theory that the eldest son is named after the grandfather.
On this basis William's eldest son was called John, and if that were also the name of his grandfather, then the father of William would have been called John.
Turning now to William's mother, and again using the descendent line, the first born child Isabella, could have been named after the mother of Jane Hill. His next daughter was called Jane, possibly after his wife. The third, fourth and fifth daughters were called Matilda, Florence and Elizabeth respectively.
Given that Dr. O'Mahony indicated that in his research the names Matilda & Florence could " not be found in any other Dickson family in Limerick", the there is an outside chance that the parents of William may have been John & Elizabeth Dickson, although John & Matilda or John & Florence remain as options.
All of this is supposition and further research of Irish records is required.
Marriage Notes for WILLIAM DICKSON and JANE HILL:
St Munchin's Church, (Church of Ireland), rebuilt 1827, stands on a hill overlooking the River Shannon in Limerick. The church is bounded by Church Street to the east; Verdant Place to the north and west, with Castle Street on it's south side. The church is within 500 feet of St John's Castle. St Munchin's is located in the oldest part of Limerick, being within the old walled town on Kings Island, originally called English Town, and the original St Munchin's is shown on street maps of 1590.
St Munchin's Church is no longer used as a church, and in 1994 was the home of a Theatre Group, however the accompanying cemetery contains many gravestones indicating the Scottish Origins of the majority of the people interred there.

Limerick, a city associated with the military, may well have been the final resting place of many Scottish ex soldiers, part of the "British Army" garrisoned to maintain peace during the repression of Catholicism, and the Act of Union of 1800, integrating Ireland within the United Kingdom. A painting of The Exchange, c 1820, clearly shows a Scots soldier in full kilt attire, standing in front of the building.

2. JOHN2 DICKSON (WILLIAM1) was born in 1844 in Limerick. He married CATHERINE FITZGERALD (1865) in The St John's RC Cathedral, Limerick. Catherine was the daughter of JOHN FITZGERALD and MARGARET DALY.

JOHN2 DICKSON was "alive" at time of John's marriage in 1892, 20th December & was "alive" at time of Patrick's marriage in 1907, 28th July. JOHN2 DICKSON married Catherine Fitzgerald 3rd October 1865 at age of 22 years. His address prior to his marriage was Taylor Street, Limerick. The Civil Marriage also took place 30 Sep 1865 in the Registry Office in Limerick.

Her brother Patrick moved to Scotland between 1901 and 1907, did Jane stay in Ireland or did she also move to Scotland, no further information about Jane is known.

3. JOHN3 DICKSON (JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1867 in Myles Street, Limerick, Ireland1, and died 1942 in Elm Grove Home, Brighton, Sussex. Notes for JOHN DICKSON:
John Dickson was born in the Parish of St Michail's in Limerick, Ireland. At the age of 18 years 6 months, John ceased being a Labourer and joined the British Army as the whole of Ireland at that time was part of Great Britain. The description of John Dickson was given as Height 5ft 63/4 inches, weight 122 lbs. (8 stone 10 lbs.) chest 34 ins, Grey eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion.
John was recruited on the 9th June 1885 in Limerick into 5 Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, and transferred into the Leinster Regiment on 12th June 1885, as 944 Private John Dickson
Until the 10th August 1885 John underwent basic training at the Leinster Regiment School, and transferred to the 2 Battalion Leinster Regiment on 11th August 1885, where he continued as a private until 3rd May 1889. On the 3rd May 1889 John was promoted to Lance Corporal, and just over 12 months later to Corporal on the 11th May 1890.
On the 25th January 1891, John returned to the Regimental depot, and 6 months later, on 29 June 1891, was promoted to Lance Sergeant, making Sergeant some 6 months late on 5 January 1892.
Having made Sergeant, John was transferred back to the 2 Battalion for overseas duty, and it was not until 28 April 1900, that John was promoted to Colour Sergeant.
It was a further 4 years before he was promoted to Warrant Officer, on the 11 May 1904. On the 30 July 1905 John was posted to the 5 Battalion Leinster Regiment as Regimental Sergeant Major, where he continued to serve until his retirement on 10 May 1909, having completed 23 years service, 5 as a Warrant Officer.

He retired from the army in Navan, Ireland at the age of 42 years, being discharged to 36 Caledon Road, East Road, Dublin. John retired with the Queens Medal for South Africa Campaign with 4 clasps, [Awarded when a Colour Sergeant in Pretoria with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and 1902 Clasp awarded in Middelburg]. He was also awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
His height was given as 5 feet 10.5 ins, chest 41 ins, eyes grey, hair brown.
During the Great War (1914-1918) John was recalled to Prince Of Wales South Lancashire Regiment (Volunteers) and granted temporary appointment of Lieutenant on 25 Jan 1915. Promoted to Captain (Quartermaster) 25 January 1918.
