On this page is recorded information about other soldiers of the Leinster Regiment. The information about them has been provided by their descendents who, having visited the this site, have donated pictures and / or information. I wish to gratefully acknowledge the help of the families concerned. If you would like to contribute to this series, your information would be welcomed by all those with an interest in the Leinsters!

In early 1915, Captain Meridith was the adjutant of the 1st Battalion Leinster Regiment.
On the 14th & 15th March 1915 the Battalion was involved in the effort to retake Trench 20 - 23 in the area of Voormezeele, St Eloi, when many officers and men lost their lives.
For services in connection with the operations around St.Eloi and Ypres, Captain J.W. Meridith was awarded the Military Cross.

During the Great War, there were 157 officers of the Leinster Regiment who fell in action, fortunately Captain Meridith was NOT one of them.

Michael John Kavanagh born 17 Dec 1879, was with the 2nd Battalion Leinsters in Bermuda in 1897.  He also served in South Africa Boer War in the 1900-2 operations in Orange River Colony, then in action at Wittenberge. Operation in Cape Colony
and
Transvaal. Michael received the Queens medal with 3 clasps and Kings medal with 2 clasps. He served in the  ranks 18 years 17 days.
In WW1 he was promoted 2nd Lt S in the Staff Reserve on 6 March 1915. He was mentioned in
Dispatches and received the Military Cross. (London Gaz 14 Nov 1916)

4 Jan 1916 he was transferred to Machine Gun Corps .  He was promoted Acting Capt. Machine Gun Corps 30 Nov 1916 to 8 March 1918

here are printed various messages that I receive about the Leinster Regiment. Each message contains an Email link to the person asking for information

Looking for information on Sergeant John Joseph Quirke no 5983.1st Battalion Leinster Regiment. He married Mary Ellen O'Dea. He was retired at the time of my fathers marriage in 1931. I am his grandson and know little about him, information would be appreciated, please send to frank quirke. Sgt Quirke served for over 20 years. In 1913 he was in Fyzabad with the 1st Battalion where his son, who was born in Crinkle Barracks in Birr, received a school prize from Lt.Col S White.

We've recently found that the brother of my great-great-grandmother, John Bergin
(b. 1861), was a Sergeant in the Leinster Regiment--we think he was in the
1st Battalion and later in the 5th. You can see a picture of him at
http://www.germar.pair.com/fitz/John1.jpg   I don't know what year he joined the regiment but given the year he was born, he probably joined around 1876 or 1880. He died in Navan, Ireland in 1924. He was born in Queen's Co. Ireland in 1861 and I would guess (given his
place of birth) that he was part of the 4th Battalion that you mentioned.
He died in 1924.

Great Grandfather J S McBride was in the 5th Battalion stationed in Navan in 1865 - at that time the Royal Highland Fusiliers. He was a Colour Sergeant and then became Quartermaster.  Nothing known after 1881 when the records at PRO Kew lose him. We think that he married in Gibraltar, her name was Puchini. Anyone help please?
