The Menin Gate Memorial & Panel 44

menin gate.jpg (14240 bytes) The Menin Gate Memorial was built to commemorate all those who fell in the Flanders conflict who have no known grave. Many soldiers where buried in a cemetery that was in turn subsequently shelled as the war progressed. This obliterated all traces of those initial grave markers, in many cases damaging even further the corpses.
Some soldier's bodies were so badly damaged that recognition was impossible and many were buried in mass graves at the time, some unfortunately were never found again. In addition the war cemeteries contain literally thousands of "unknown soldiers" graves that say simply "A soldier of the Great War". For many of those missing Leinster soldiers the Menin Gate is their Memorial.
From this page you can view the area on the Menin Gate known as Panel 44 that contains the names of all the Leinster Regiment's members who have no known grave, and who died in Flanders during the Great War. The Panel is in fact a number of individual panels that rise from the base of the wall, and occupy an area of the wall until the start of the next regiment. The photographs should download reasonably quickly, the majority are less than 30kB, however much depends upon the speed of your connection that can vary according to the time of the day and the number of persons using the web.
