Introduction

Information in this report

All information presented in this report has been transcribed from original records kept at the Cheshire Archives Record Office, Chester, by Don Dickson and may be freely used for personal or academic research into family and social history provided that the source is acknowledged.

It should also be kept in mind that many persons "enumerated" could neither read nor write, so that the spelling of names were often left to the book keeper's deciphering of what they "heard".

Readers should always keep in mind that they should always view the original entry should they not be certain of the information in this report.

Tithe Apportionment 21 November 1838

The tabulated data contained in this report has been extracted by Donald G Dickson from the unpublished Tithe Apportionment Schedule for the Township of Kelsall held at the Cheshire Record Office in reference 21/11/1838

The Tithe Commutation Act, 1836 ordered that tithes should be paid in cash, not in kind. A large-scale map was constructed for Kelsall with each piece of land and building recorded with a number. The schedule of the numbers were produced in a book and recorded the landowner, a description of the land and the tenant. The apportionment, or tithe equivalent, in cash was also noted.

Data contained in the Index

The data recorded is an extraction from the unpublished manuscript apportionment book for Kelsall.

The purpose of this data was to create a list of landowners and tenants to benchmark the inhabitants of Kelsall in 1838. It does not contain much detail on the actual land and buildings, but the schedule number is recorded to facilitate identification of the land or building by referring to the original tithe map.

The data can be searched by land owner surname or searched by tenant surname or you can download the file
