The following names are written in script on the inside cover. Date of appointment
1874 January 5th. This school was reopened on Monday January 5th as a public elementary school by Alan Smyth, late a student of the Diocesan Training College, Chester. There were present 41 boys and 22 girls. Jan 6th. Opened school at 9 o'clock. Several boys and girls were late as they had been used to assembling at 9.30 under a previous master. Jan 7th. The school was visited by the Rev Mr.. Dalton who announced to the children his intention of giving them all a tea on the following day at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Jan 8th. The school was visited by Rev Mr. Thomas, curate of Duddon. The school treat was held in the school at 4.40, there were exactly 100 children present. Monday Jan 12th. Admitted 12 boys and 8 girls. They were placed in the different classes as follows.
Afternoon: Gave the 3rd & 4th classes a lesson in Simple Addition. Tuesday Jan 13th Morning: Gave the 2nd class a session in simple multiplication, as some of them had never done it before. Afternoon commenced to teach the children to sing a new song entitled "Old John and his apple tree". They were very interested and seem fond of singing. Wednesday Jan 14th. Gave a lesson in the morning to the first class in compound proportion by method of first principles. Thus Jan 15th. Gave the 3rd & 4th classes a 1st lesson in numeration and notation. Fri Jan 16th. In the afternoon Miss Kelly a young lady of the village who had been engaged by the Rev Mr. Dalton came for the 1st time to take the girls at Sewing, Knitting and plain needlework. She had before kept a girls school in the village. Monday Jan 19th. Admitted 5 boys and 4 girls. They were placed in the following classes.
Commenced to teach the children another school song "Flowers wildwood flowers". In the afternoon gave the 2nd class a second lesson in simple multiplication. Alfred Roberts and Marshall Roberts, sons of Mr. Roberts of the Royal Oak Inn are withdrawn for 3 months because their father did not give 3 months notice at the Tarvin Grammar School. Their father has promised to send them again after Lady-Day. Tuesday Jan 20th. Morning gave the 3rd & 4th classes another lesson in Simple Addition. Afternoon the school was visited by Miss Warburton a lady residing in the village. Wednesday Jan 21st. Kept in several boys in the 3rd & 4th classes for not having done their home lessons. Thursday Jan 22nd. Miss Kelly, who takes the Girls at sewing, being away on some business in the afternoon, I took the girls in the school at the usual work. Friday Jan 23rd. Kept in 24 for being late most of them in the morning. Monday Jan 26th. Admitted 4 boys and 2 girls they were classified as follows;
Wm. Nicholas a lad son of a farmer in the village commenced today as a Monitor, previous to offering himself as a candidate for admission as a Pupil Teacher. Commenced to teach the children another school song entitled "Morning breaks". Tuesday Jan 27th. Morning gave the whole of 1st and 2nd classes a lesson in numeration and notation. Afternoon gave the 1st and 4th classes a lesson in numeration and notation. Wednesday Jan 28th. The school was visited in the afternoon by Miss Warburton and Miss Matthews, two ladies of the village. Thursday Jan 29th.The Rev Mr.. Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Monday Feb 4th. Admitted Ann Jeffs, sister to Sarah Jeffs, she was placed in the 4th class. Morning gave the 2nd class lesson in numeration and notation. Afternoon gave the 2nd class a 1st lesson in Simple division. Commenced to teach the children a new song "Children Go". Miss Matthews paid another visit to the school this afternoon. Tuesday Feb 3rd. Morning gave the 3rd & 4th classes another lesson in simple addition. Afternoon gave another lesson in numeration & notation to the same classes. Wednesday 4th. Kept in 7 boys and 13 girls for being late in the morning. The Rev Mr.. Dalton and Miss Matthews paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Thursday Feb 5th. Gave the 3rd & 4th classes a lesson in simple addition in the morning. The following boys were kept in for inattention to their arithmetic.
Wednesday Feb 6th. A large number were absent today especially in the lower classes as the weather was very cold and frosty. There were 19 absent in the other classes and (?) altogether. The Rev Mr.. Dalton paid a visit to the school in the afternoon. Monday Feb 9th. Morning gave the boys in the upper section of the 1st class a lesson in Vulgar Fractions. Afternoon the school was visited by Miss Matthews. Tuesday Feb 10th. Morning the children commenced to learn a new song "Where oh where boys are you going to?" Afternoon the school was visited by the Rev Mr. Pitar, Vicar of Ashton and Rev Mr.. Dalton. 20 boys & girls were kept in this evening for being late. Wednesday Feb 11th. Mrs Becket came this morning to the school with 3 tickets from the Reliving Officer for her 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, to certify to their regular attendance. The weather being very cold a number of children were absent. Thursday Feb 12th. Punished Alfred Rowe and Herbert William for talking and inattention to their work. Chas Brooks Thos Gilbert Ernest Astbury John Parry and Herbert Williams kept in this afternoon for inattention to their arithmetic. Friday Feb 13th. The weather still being very cold a number of children were absent, especially in the lower classes. In the afternoon 10 boys and 6 girls were kept in for being late. Monday Feb 16th. Admitted 4 boys this morning. They were classified as follows:
Gave the 2nd class a lesson in long division. Commenced to teach the children a new song "Let none but those who live in vain" Tuesday Feb 17th. Gave the lower section of the 2nd class and the 3rd class a first lesson in subtraction. Afternoon 7 boys and 5 girls kept in for being late. Wednesday Feb 18th. Today, being Ash Wednesday, the children assembled in the school as usual at 9 o'clock and after prayers and singing a few Hymns they all marched to the service held in the church. Afternoon, as it was the usual custom here with the consent of the Rev Mr. Dalton I gave them a half-holiday. Thursday Feb 19th. Morning gave the 3rd & 4th classes another lesson in numeration and notation. Afternoon Rev Mr. Dalton & Miss Matthews paid a visit to the school. Monday Feb 23rd. Admitted Marshall Vernon, a boy about 6 years of age, he was placed in the 5th class. Robert Bell, a lad about 13 years and 10 months from Mickle Trafford, came this morning for a week on trial previous to his engagement as paid Monitor and candidate for Pupil Teacher. Wm. Nicholas who had previously engaged to come having been prevented by his friends from fulfilling his promise. Tuesday Feb 24th. Gave the 2nd class a lesson in simple subtraction. Afternoon gave the upper division of the same class a lesson in long division. Wednesday Feb 25th. The school was visited by the Rev John Dalton. Thursday Feb 26th. Miss Kelly the sewing mistress being absent this afternoon the girls remained in the school at the ordinary work. Monday March 2nd. Robert Bell's weeks trial being perfectly satisfactory he was permanently engaged by the Managers for 4 shillings a week previous to his examination. Morning gave the girls in the 2nd class a lesson in simple subtraction. The children commenced to learn a new song "Well may the keel row". Gave the 3rd & 4th classes a lesson in subtraction in the afternoon. Tuesday March 3rd. The school was visited in the afternoon by Miss Matthews and a lady from Liverpool. Wednesday March 4th. Thomas Guest, Thomas Gilbert and Fred Rowe were kept in after 4 o'clock for not doing their home lessons. Friday March 6th. the Rev John Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Monday Mar 9th. The children commenced to learn another "School Song" "Father dear Father come home with me now". Gave the 1st class and a portion of the 2nd class a lesson in long division in the morning. Afternoon gave the 3rd & 4th classes a lesson in subtraction. Tuesday March 10th. Admitted James Plant and Jessie Plant both the children of a farmer residing at "Castle Hill". The boy was placed in the 5th class and the girl in the 4th. Wednesday March 11th. Miss Kelly, the sewing mistress, being away this afternoon, the girls were kept in the school at the usual work. Thursday Mar 12th. The Rev Mr.. Dalton and his nephew paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Monday Mar 17th. Admitted Ann Astbury, Joseph Astbury and Job Astbury. The former was placed in the 4th class, the 2 latter in the 6th. Commenced to teach another song "Just before the battle mother". Gave the 1st class another lesson on long division in the morning; and in the afternoon a lesson in subtraction to the 3rd & 4th classes. Tuesday Mar 17th. The school was visited by Miss Matthews and a lady from Liverpool. Wednesday Mar 18th. Chas Dean, Wm. Cawley, Richard Lewis, Isaac Nicholas and Henry Wright were kept in after 4 o'clock, each to write 200 lines for leaving the school without my permission. Thursday Mar 19th. The Rev Mr.. Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Monday March 23rd. The children commenced learning another school song "The Mustree boy". In the morning gave the 1st class a lesson on compound addition and in the afternoon the 3rd and 4th classes a lesson in compound subtraction. Tuesday March 24th. Tuesday morning. Gave the 2nd class Girls a 1st lesson in simple multiplication. Wednesday March 20th. Miss Mathews paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Friday March 26th. Several boys were absent this week as they are employed by the farmers in setting potatoes. The average attendance was (?????) Monday March 30th. Admitted Ellen Barker a girl from Delamere National School. She was placed in the 2nd class. Also re-admitted Wm. Ruscoe who was placed in the 4th class as before. Joseph Dean placed in the 5th class and Emily Dean placed in the 6th class. Commenced a new song "The Blue Bell of Scotland". Gave the 1st class a lesson in compound subtraction in the morning and in the afternoon the 3rd & 4th classes another lesson in subtraction. Tuesday March 31st. The Rev Mr. Dalton and his nephew paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Wednesday April 1st. Several boys were absent on this and the next days most of them being engaged in setting potatoes. Thursday April 2nd. (Written as March 2 in the book!). John Wright, James Wright, Henry Wright and Edwin Wright, 4 brothers left the school today as their parents are leaving Kelsall to reside at Chester. Friday April 3rd. Today being Good Friday there was a holiday for the whole school. Monday 6th April. As it was always the custom here the children had a general holiday. Tuesday April 7th. The attendance today was very small indeed there were only 25 present in the morning and 28 in the afternoon. The farmers all being setting potatoes employ all the children they can get. In the afternoon Miss Matthews paid a visit to the school. Wednesday April 8th. Gave the 3rd & 4th classes a lesson in numeration and notation in the morning and in the afternoon a similar lesson to the 1st & 2nd classes. Thursday April 9th. Rev John Dalton visited the school in the afternoon. Friday April 10th. The school was visited by Miss Matthews this afternoon. Monday April 13th. The attendance was slightly improved this morning but there are still a large number absent at potato setting. Commenced a new sing "Ring the bell watchman" In the morning gave a lesson to the 1st class in compound multiplication and in the afternoon another lesson to the 3rd & 4th class in simple subtraction. Tuesday April 14th. Ernest Astbury, Wm. Astbury, Wm. Ruscoe, Caleb Lloyd, Sarah Ellen Heayes and Jane Ann Sutton were kept after 4 o'clock for being late. Wednesday April 15th. The Rev Mr.. Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Thursday April 16th. Miss Mathews visited the school in the afternoon. Friday Apr 17th. Miss Kelly being obliged to be away this afternoon the girls were kept in the school at the usual work. Monday April 20th. Admitted a little girl Mary Crank. She was placed in the 6th class. The attendance today is still small but the potatoes setting will be nearly finished this week. Tuesday April 21st the girls in the 2nd class who are going to be examined in Standard 1 have worked with the 3rd and 4th classes the whole of this week. Wednesday April 22nd. The school was visited in the afternoon by Miss Matthews. Friday April 24th the whole school had a holiday today in order that the school might be whitewashed and cleaned for the Inspectors visit (on Monday!) Monday April 27th. The school was inspected this morning by the Rev H. Smith M.A. and his assistant Mr. Williams. There were 79 children present and of these only 43 were presented for Examination. Afternoon the school broke up for a weeks holiday. Tuesday May 5th. The school commenced again this morning at the usual time. Gave 1st and part of the 2nd classes a lesson in long division. Afternoon the 3rd and 4th classes ad a lesson in simple subtraction. Wednesday May 6th. Rearranged the various classes in order to prepare for another years standard work. Several boys and girls in the 3rd & 4th classes put into the second and others from the 5th put into the 3rd and 4th. Thursday May 7th. (Written Aug 6th in book!) Jane Ann Sutton, Mary Sutton, Wm. Cawley and H Nicholas kept in this evening for having no Home lessons. Thursday May 8th. According to the approved timetable the children sang from 3 to 3.30 this afternoon. Monday May 11th. Admitted a little girl Lilly Plant she was placed in the 6th class. Gave 1st class another lesson in long division and the 2nd class a lesson in simple multiplication and in the afternoon the 3rd and 4th classes a lesson in simple addition. Tuesday May 12th. The school was visited this afternoon by the Rev Mr.. Dalton. Wednesday May 13th. The school was visited in the afternoon by Miss Matthews. Friday may 14th. The following were kept in for Home Lessons R Lewis, Wm. Cawley, Henry Nicholas, Jas Wright J A Sutton and Ann Lewis. Monday May 18th. Admitted Enoch Astbury, a lad over 11 years he was placed in the 2nd class Tuesday May 19th. Five boys and 6 girls were kept in for being late. Wednesday May 20th. Miss Mathews paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Thursday May 21st. Wm. Cawley, Fred Rowe and Thomas Broom were punished and kept in for inattention to their work. Monday May 25th. Admitted Thomas Mayers and Wm. Mayers, two boys from Tarvin. The former was placed in the 1st class and the latter in the 3rd and 4th classes. Also Mary Wilson and Marg. Astbury both being placed in the 6th classes. As there are only 4 boys to be presented in the 4th standard and one of these is often absent I have decided not to take geography in either of the 1st four classes but substitute for it a lesson in arithmetic whenever it occurs in the timetable. Tuesday May 26th the 3rd and 4th classes had arithmetic instead of geography. Wednesday May 27th the Rev J Dalton visited the school this afternoon. The 1st and 2nd classes had arithmetic instead of geography. Thursday May 28th. A number of boys and girls were kept in for being late and having no home lessons. Monday June 1st. Admitted a girl Mary Cravin. She was placed in the 2nd class. Also a boy Wm. Astbury, he was placed in the 6th class. Tuesday 2nd June seven boys and 3 girls were kept in for being late. Wednesday 3rd June Miss Mathews paid a visit o the school this afternoon. Thursday 4th June. Wm. Mayers, Jas Crank, Herbert Williams, H Nicholas and Rich Lewis kept in for having no home lessons. Friday 5th. The girls were kept at their usual lessons this afternoon the sewing mistress being away. Monday June 8th. The attendance this day was rather better than last Monday there being 67 present in the morning and 70 in the afternoon. Wednesday 10th June, Miss Matthews paid a visit to the school this afternoon Thursday 11th June, 9 boys and 5 girls were kept in after 4 o'clock for being late. Friday 12th June, Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Monday June 15th. The attendance this week was rather less owing to the commencement of Hay Making. Wednesday 17th June. Owing to the fact of a concert which will be held on Friday the 19th inst. on "Behalf of the school fund" the whole school broke up for the midsummer holidays on the Wednesday evening in order to get the room ready for the concert. The school will begin again on July 6th after a holiday of 2 weeks and 3 days. Thursday June 18th: The following is a summary of the Inspector's Report which was received by the Managers on Saturday June 11th 1874. Kelsall St Philips National School Cheshire. "Owing to the ignorant condition in which the present Master found the school a few months ago, great allowances have been made at the examination. I shall hope to find great improvement in all respects at the next inspection" My Lords will be ready to allow R Bells admission provided that suitable arrangements are made for his lodging near the school. He must improve in Grammar.

The school commenced again this morning after the Holidays. A number of children were absent in the two lower classes. Wednesday 9th July. The school was visited this afternoon by Miss Matthews. Friday 10th July. The total average attendance for the week is 52.8 Monday July 13th. Admitted Wm. Astbury and John Astbury. They seemed very backward for their age and were obliged to be placed in the 6th class. Tuesday 14th July. Miss Matthew visited the school this afternoon. Friday 17th July. The attendance this week has slightly improved the average for the week being 60.2 Monday July 20th. Admitted a boy named Edwin Cookson he was placed in the 4th class. Wednesday 22nd July. Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Friday 24th July. The schools was visited this morning by Rev J Dalton. Average weekly attendance is 58.1 Monday July 27th. Admitted a boy named John Troop he was placed in the 4th class also a girl Susan Wright she was put into the 3rd class. Wednesday 29th July. Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Friday 31st July the attendances this week have decreased the average being only 52 Monday August 1st commenced a new song today entitled "The four jolly smiths" In the morning gave the 1st class a lesson in compound addition and in the afternoon the 3rd and 4th class in simple addition. Tuesday 2nd Aug. Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Friday 7th Aug. The sewing mistress being away this afternoon the girls were kept at their ordinary schoolwork. Average weekly attendance = 55.6 Monday August 10th. Readmitted a boy named Wm. Dutton. He was originally in the 5th class but was now placed in the 3rd and 4th. Wednesday 11th August, Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Friday 14th August, Mary Cravens a girl in the 2nd class left the school to go into service. The attendance this week has improved especially in the 1st and 2nd classes. The weekly average being 67. Monday August 17th. In the morning gave the 1st class a lesson in compound subtraction and the 2nd class a lesson in simple multiplication. In the afternoon gave the 3rd and 4th classes a lesson in simple addition. Tuesday 18th August. The school was visited this afternoon by Miss Warburton a Lady of the Village. Thursday 19th August. Miss Matthews paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Friday 20th August. The average attendance for the week = 59.9 Monday August 24th. Admitted 2 girls Alice Wright and Alice Plant. They were both placed in the 2nd class. Wednesday Aug 14th. The Rev John Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon Friday the 28th August. The attendance had decreased this week, as many of the children are away at harvest work and gleaning. The average is only 51.2. The school broke up for a fortnight this afternoon. Monday September 14th. The school commenced again this morning after a 2-week holiday. Admitted 3 boys namely Thomas Davies from Tarvin National School who were placed in the 1st class and Robert Ankers and Richard Witter from Clotton both being put into the 2nd class. Tuesday 15th Sept. Miss Kelly being engaged by the Rev Mr.. Dalton to assist in decorating the church for the Harvest Festival was absent this afternoon and will be the whole of the week. The girls will therefore be kept at ordinary schoolwork. Wed 16th September, Miss Matthew visited the school this afternoon. Friday 18th September, the attendance this week has been rather small owing to several children being engaged in gleaning. The average is 53.2 Monday Sept 21st. In the morning gave the 1st class a lesson in compound multiplication and the 2nd class a lesson in simple multiplication of 2 figures. Wed 23rd September. The school was visited this afternoon by Miss Warburton. Friday the 25th September. The attendance still continues small a number of children being absent gathering blackberries. The average weekly attendance is 53 the same as last week. Monday Sept 28th, commenced this morning to learn a new song entitled "Far Away" Gave the 1st class a lesson in compound multiplication and the 2nd in simple multiplication of 3 figures Thursday Oct 1st, the Rev John Dalton paid a visit to the school this afternoon. Friday Oct 2nd, the attendance this week has improved a little the weekly average being 59.5. There are still several children away gathering blackberries. Monday Oct 5th, admitted a girl Sarah Cawley she was placed in the 3rd class. Wednesday 7th Oct., the school was visited this afternoon by Miss Warburton and Miss Williams. Friday 9th October, the average weekly attendance for this week is 61. Monday 12th Oct. admitted a little girl Eleanor Jeffs. She was placed in the 6th class. Morning gave the 1st class a lesson in compound multiplication and the 2nd class a in simple multiplication of 3 figures. Friday 17th October, the attendance this week has slightly improved the weekly average being 64.9 Monday Oct 19th admitted a boy Samuel Parkinson, from Clotton School. He was placed in the 2nd class. Tuesday Oct 20th, the school was visited by Miss Matthew in the afternoon. Friday Oct 23rd, the average attendance for this week is 66.9 Monday Oct 26th, the attendance this morning was great in than for several weeks there being 77 present altogether. Thursday 29th Oct., the school was visited this afternoon by Miss Warburton. Friday 30th Oct., the average weekly attendance was 78.5 Monday November 2nd admitted Wm. Bale from Birkenhead and Cecil Ashbrook from Clotton School both being in the 2nd class. Tuesday Nov 3rd, The Rev Dalton, Mr. Barber, Mr. Newport came to the school to examine the partition wall previous to the alteration which is going to be made. Friday Nov 6th, The average attendance has fallen to 62.9 this week owing to a report that the alterations were to commence this week. Monday 9th Nov, Admitted a boy from Willington School named John Crowford. He was placed in the 3rd class & 4th classes.
Tuesday Nov 17th, The school commenced again this morning after being closed for 4 days. Thursday Nov 19th There was no school in the afternoon as the room had to be scrubbed and got ready for the concert on behalf of the school funds on the Friday. The average attendance was only 46. Monday Nov 23rd Admitted a boy named Thomas Ashbrook and a girl Hannah Goulbowin both from Willington School. They were placed in the 3rd class. Wednesday Nov 25th, The Rev J Dalton visited the school this afternoon. Friday the 27th November, The average weekly attendance was 64. Monday Nov 30th, Admitted boy from Clotton named William Lauceley, he was placed in the 2nd class. Tuesday Nov 1st, Miss Matthews visited the school this afternoon. Friday Dec 4th, The average weekly attendance was 62.6 being rather less than last week. Monday Dec 8th Re-admitted a girl named Alice Plant. She was placed in the 2nd class. Afternoon Miss Kelly the sewing mistress being very ill the girls were kept at ordinary work instead of sewing. The weather being cold the attendance has not been too good today and yesterday. Friday 12th Dec. Owing to the frost the average weekly attendance has fallen to 54.6 Monday Dec 14th, The attendance is still small owing to the weather only 43 present. As Miss Kelly still remains unwell her sister will take the Girls this work Wednesday 16th Dec, The school was visited this afternoon by Miss Matthews. Friday 18th December, As a heavy fall of snow occurred on Wednesday the attendance since has been very small. The average for the week being only 30.5 The school broke up this afternoon for the Christmas Holiday of 2 weeks. Footnote Gleaning, gathering the useful remnants of a crop after harvest. On a farm, once the wheat had been gathered, women & children would seek permission to "glean" the stray ears for their own use. The "gleanings" were carried home in sheets and stacked in a corner of the house, prior to threshing. The resultant grain could be either milled or used as feed for livestock. (back) |
