Holding, Turner & Haspey
This page is included as an example of the difficulties associated with using the IGI when searching for ancestors. This page contains a number of extractions from the IGI Index, extracted whilst searching for my maternal grandmother Mabel Turner, grandfather Thomas Holding and any "Haspey"
Bir F TURNER Mabel Dorothy, father William Warren TURNER, mother Joanna Maud BURCH 22 Mar 1896 Ipswich Suffolk England
This entry looked promising identifying the birth of a female, Mabel Turner whose father was William Turner (so far so good), except that I know that Mabel married Thomas in 1908, and as such my grandmother could not be this Mabel who was a mere 10 yrs old in 1908!
The Holdings initially drew a complete blank ! with the IGI just identifying varying Thomas Holden
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Eli HOLDEN Betty 3 Mar 1816 Scammonden Yorkshire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Ellis HOLDEN 21 May 1671 Deane By Bolton Lancashire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Ellis HOLDEN Margaret 23 Sep 1855 Saint Peter Liverpool Lancashire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Eli HOLDEN Betty 3 Mar 1816 Scammonden Yorkshire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Eli HOLDEN Hannah 16 Nov 1806 Ripponden Yorkshire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Ely HOLDEN 9 Oct 1755 Halifax Yorkshire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Ellis HOLDEN 21 May 1671 Deane By Bolton Lancashire England
Chr M HOLDEN Thomas Ellis HOLDEN Margaret 23 Sep 1855 Saint Peter Liverpool Lancashire England
But the Haspey search did identify John Haspey who married Catharine Gibson in 1807.
Mar M HASPEY John Catharine GIBSON 27 Dec 1807 St John Chester Cheshire England
Mar M GIBSON Catharine John HASPEY 27 Dec 1807 St John Chester Cheshire England
The moral is always double check on everything, as I did with John Haspey, and an e-mail to another researcher in Cheshire drew forth this confirmation ...

Subject: Re: St John Chester
"Dear Don,
Thanks for the E-mail. I hadn't noticed this surname before - it certainly
is unusual. Thank you for giving me a starting place in the St John's
records. It's rather a large register, and if I'm looking for needles in a
hay-stack, I do prefer to know that there is at least one needle there!
What I have done is search the marriages from 1760 - 1840 (except, obviously
for the 1795 - 1803 gap). If you would like me to continue further at either
end I will do so. This is what I found (otp = of this parish):
The 1807 entry is
27 Dec John Haspey labourer, bachelor
otp & Catharine Gibson spinster otp.Banns
Other entries were:
1806 11 Aug William Haspey ships
carpenter Bach otp & Eleanor Darlington sp. otp. Banns
1816 4 Nov William Williams tanner Bach otp & Eliza Aspey sp. otp. Banns
1828 24 June John Aspey shipwright Bach & Elizabeth Morris widow otp. Banns
1834 7 Sept William Haspey widower shipwright & Margaret Jones sp. otp. Banns
There were also some Asprey's (various spellings)
Let me know if there's any more you want.
Mary"
I believe that this is an excellent example of using the internet for research!
The good news is that for Mabel I think that I have eventually identified Mabel using the Family Search web site, and now must make a trip to the Family Record Centre in London to verify Mabel Turner, born 12 Nov, 1892 in Settle, Yorkshire.
